Advertising is everywhere in our society, and no matter which way you put it, everyone is exposed to advertising all the time during the average day. This advertising wouldn't be everywhere if it didn't work, and a major part of the advertising is the core idea of propaganda, which is information that is biased or misleading. Companies use many different styles of propaganda that are designed to get you to feel a certain way without realizing that the advertisement may not be entirely truthful. These companies will aim to play off of your emotions and your assumptions to subconsciously promote their brand in your head.
A huge question we need to ask ourselves is how we can recognize this propaganda and reduce the misleading nature of the advertisements. One of the biggest ways propaganda works on people is to think with their emotions instead of their head. They prey off the immediate reaction and rely on the fact that you will hardly pay any attention to the advertisement. One of the best ways to recognize the effects of propaganda is simply to think about it. If we look at the propaganda from a completely unbiased way so we can see what bias is incorporated into the advertising that might change our opinion of it.
If we all took advertisements and made an attempt to remove the bias from them, you might realize that you aren't buying things you don't need, or making unnecessary purchases that might have been influenced by your emotions. We can also use this strategy to look at news and political sources that are spreading propaganda. Often these sources will be biased towards a point of view, and you can get an opinion from them that isn't even your own. It is very important to be able to recognize this bias or we might be living in a world where none of our opinions are truly ours.
To truly be living with no bias from our 'trusted' sources, we all need to take the time to truly analyze what kind of information we are accepting as truth, and what propaganda is being put into our heads. All you have to do is think and you can significantly reduce the effect that advertising and propaganda has on our society.
