Indigenous Rights Matter. Chloe Walker
For years, Indigenous people have fought for their rights and today are still continuing to do so. Indigenous peoples have the right, without the discrimination towards them, to the improvement of their economic and social conditions, including, inter alia, in the areas of education, employment, vocational training and retraining, housing, sanitation, health and social security. Abuse, coercive assimilation, and violence. Indigenous peoples continue to experience grave human rights violations on a daily basis despite all the advances in international human rights standard-setting. Indigenous communities all over the world deal with issues of violence and brutality, ongoing assimilation policies, marginalization, land dispossession, forced removal or relocation, denial of land rights, effects of large-scale development, abuses by military forces and armed conflict, and a host of other abuses.
Every region of the world has reported cases of violence and cruelty, which are most frequently committed against indigenous people who are protecting their rights and their lands, territories, and communities. Indigenous people keep getting denied throughout the world and the government is acting as though our lives and rights don't matter unlike a non-indigenous person.
On September 9th 2021 nine year old Baeleigh was hit and killed by a driver and even a year after the incident occurred we are being denied our rights to get justice. December 19th 2021 my brother got a sentence of 2 years for crimes he was barely a part of but gets the longer sentence since he is an Indigenous man, while his non-indigenous friends only get a 1 year sentence. December 8th 2021 17 year old Hunter was killed in a drive-by shooting right in front of his dad, the shooter has not been given any time as they said it was an accident and was a non-indigenous man.
The year is 2023 and we are still being denied our rights and not getting the justice our people deseveed. We will continue to do protests and to fights for our rights because you can't keep us quiet, you can't take our voices, and you can't take away me. As of today more than 100 protests have gone on across Canada so that our voices are heard. Marie-Anne Day Walker-Pelletier now retired Cheif of Okanese First Nation has used her voice against the government so that Indigenous rights are allowed and not denied. We will continue to fights for our rights if it's the last thing we do.
