Overdose is taking lives away, and we can’t let this happen

Addictions and overdoses are high in Canada. Most of the western world has bad addiction, but in some parts, worse. Brazil and Mexico are the countries with the most addictive. Research shows that there are more than 6 million people addicted to drugs in Canada. We have to eliminate it somehow.

Cannabis is taken for pleasure. But medications and narcotics are taken uselessly by people nowadays because they find “pleasure” in them. Surprisingly, cannabis became legal in Canada in 2018. And now we have to change it. First of all, our generation is a problem these days. The environment affects them. We see the majority of people smoking in the streets and that is not only making them ill but also harmful to the environment.

Secondly, Narcotics and medications like fentanyl and Tylenol are the most dangerous. People think overdosing will make them feel better and take the pain away fast, but in reality, they are just ruining their lives. Tylenol, Advil and sleeping pills are the most common Over- the- Counter medications in Canada. People take them to get rid of pain and headaches, but some people use them as their suicide tool and “ecstasy”.

It needs to be resolved. People need to seek help, get therapy and do wellness checks. Cigarettes, vapes and weed are also dangerous, but not worse than consuming high amounts of medications and painkillers.

Opioids are a type of drug, similar to morphine. Last year in 2022, 204 deaths were confirmed and 217 suspected deaths were caused by drugs in Saskatchewan.

It is really in fact,  but I try to learn more about drugs and mental health. I am just surprised by the fact of how a person’s life changes after using drugs. It’s just shocking that their life just gets ruined even though they think it is to “numb” themselves.

So how can we solve this issue? Well... We can solve this problem by asking them about their mood, emotions and how they feel. Just like a therapist asks a patient. If the patient needs to take painkillers or sleeping pills, let the person know to use them with caution and mark the doses. Alert them about the side effects of the pills. Not only in Saskatchewan, but the community also needs to learn more about using medications and drugs and learn about their health situation.

The helpline is always open. If you need serious help, please do not hesitate to call 911 or the suicide hotline.

Human life has worth. If you think like giving up on your life using those pills, it is better to open up to your trusted adult or your therapist. It is worthless to waste a life when you should thank and praise the god that he gave you a life to live.

You can do better without them I promise.

Thank you, Fatima.
