Who knew there would be so many horrific issues, with helpful prescription medications? Overprescribed and misused medication are what I believe will be the ultimate downfall of society. As medications are misused and abused, one’s body gains a sort of tolerance to that drugs effects. Due to this, as sickness weaves its way in, and these medications are truly needed…they won’t be effective. Forcing drug companies to research further into stronger, heavier prescription drugs to relieve their patient’s needs. Now to me, I believe that pharmacy companies should not have to spend millions of dollars on these new medications, when they are also raising awareness to stop the misuse what they themselves are supplying and in perspective, are budgeting and expanding.

Today’s societal crisis is the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs, most often found in 13-18-year-old kids. In 2015 alone, 40% of Canadas population, for that age range, said it would be “incredibly easy” to obtain, use or sell prescription drugs found in and around their houses. The medications most easily readable would be those of: Opioids, stimulants and benzodiazepines; targeted towards pain, sleep, as well as disorders such as anxiety, depression and ADHD. In addition, 17% admitted to cannabis use, and 40% to alcohol consumption – which is widely known to interfere with the effects and results of many prescription medications. Because of the misuse, it is said that up to 36% of antibiotic drugs are no longer useful in many adults and teens, not only because of misuse, but also because in Canada alone 32%, of drugs prescribed are unneeded and/or mis-prescribed.
