This Tuesday, November 22, 2019, Bedford Road school administration is discussing single-use plastic in this school. They are worried because of the issue of plastic pollution and it’s an effect on our environment. Teachers and students of Bedford Road will support the ban on plastic bags in school. The sources of plastic bags in school are from many sources, for example, fast-food restaurants, convenience stores, and student lunch foods. 70% of plastic bags are in recycling bins and around the school.
Single-use plastic represents one of many challenges to a sustainable future for our planet. Plastic pollution has begun to negatively impact the natural environment and create problems for plants, oceans and anywhere. In Canada, plastic waste is a big issue. According to the Canadian government, Canadians use almost 15 billion plastic bags and about 2.8 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in Canadian landfills every year. There are some issues with plastic waste in Canada.  At the end of 2013, Canada exported to the Philippines 2,400 tonnes of Canadian waste. It was a private commercial transaction done without the philippine government’s consent. After 3 years, the plastic waste brings back to Vancouver. After the president of the Philippines warned the Canadian government about the issue of plastic waste.

There are some solutions to not use plastic bags and decrease plastic bags inside of school. This upcoming December, Bedford Road will open the cafeteria. All students will be able to stay inside of school every lunchtime and not will go outside to get take out food with plastic bags. The students have their own lunch food. It must have lunch bags made of canvas or a recycle bag. Not all kinds of plastics are totally banned in this school. The school wants to decrease the number of plastics and save our planet.

The world has a plastic pollution problem. Single-use plastic is one of the problems of plastic pollution. That is why Bedford Road take action to solve the pollution of plastics, mostly plastic bags. We’ve seen a lot of positive action, but the truth is that we all need to do more.
