Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women -Cassidy Thompson
Indigenous women have been going missing and have been murdered in Canada and the United States for many years. Little babies such as not even a year old yet to an 83 year old have all gone missing. Lot of these cases haven't been solved, some cases remain unresolved and few cases remain solved. MMIW is very rarely understood as a human rights issue, according to the government MMIW is very understood as a criminal concern or a social issue. Indigenous women who live in Canada are 3 times more likely to experience violence and are also 6 times more likely to be murdered. In March of 2015 there were almost 1,200 MMIWG, but as of May 2022 there about 4,000 MMIWG. Being Indigenous and 15 years old it is 3.5 times more likely to experience violence than non-Indigenous women.
Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women is a human rights issue, but the government clarifies it as and criminal concern and/or a social issue. 280 cases were of murdered Indigenous women, 128 cases were missing Indigenous women, 506 MMIWG cases were identified across 71 selected urban cities, 98 cases were marked with an "unknown" status. It isn't jus Indigenous women who are victims 82% of Indigenous men are victims. Some cases have not been solved because the government doesn't think this is a big issue.
May 5th has been announced as officially MMIW day. On that day Indigenous people across Canada, maybe even the United States wear red to represent ‘No More Stolen Sisters’ and to show respect towards MMIW and spread awareness. This violence against Indigenous women has to stop, which is another reason for ‘Red Dress Day’ which is another way to call MMIW day. This is a very serious issue, not a criminal concern or social issue, this is a big human rights issue that has been going on for so long, and it needs to be stopped. Wear red on May 5th to show your support towards MMIW.
